Pediatric Hematology Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Rajinder Nagar, New Delhi

The Pediatric Hematology Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit, Institute of Child Health at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, has been dedicated to the care of children with blood diseases and cancers for over 15 years now. Hematology and Oncology services were established at our center since 1992 and stem cell transplant facility has been set up since 2000. We are one of the premier consultative and patient care resources in the private setup in North India for children with blood diseases and cancer. Through an active and multi-faceted outreach program, we serve primary pediatricians and other referring physicians, a comprehensive system of diagnosis, shared care model of treatment and long term follow up.

Our clinical practice is based at Centre for Child Health, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi, India. Here we staff a dedicated inpatient area (Ward 6), a daycare area for chemotherapy, procedures and transfusion support and an outpatient facility. From the perspective of patient numbers, our program is one of the largest in private healthcare setup in North India. There are currently 2 full time faculty members in the PHO division, as well as 2 hematology oncology fellows and an outstanding support and administrative staff of over 20 individuals.Each year we see approximately 200 new cancer patients, 250-300 new hematology patients and our staff handle over 2000 outpatient clinic visits. Center for child health has a fully equipped Pediatric ICU with state-of-the-art facilities ventilation and renal replacement therapies as well as dedicated 24-hour subspecialty backup. Our Blood bank services are at par with the best the country has to offer and have ably supported us in our patient care.

We have a 2-bedded state of the art bone marrow transplant unit with dedicated nursing staff with a patient to nurse ratio of 1:1. Since the start of our BMT program in 2007, we have done over 50 bone marrow transplants. This includes over 35 allogeneic transplants, 12 cord blood transplants and 3 haploidentical transplants. Indications for which we have done stem cell transplantation include thalassemia, refractory leukemias, PRCA, Lysosomal storage diseases and primary immunodeficiencies like HLH and SCID.

We have key administrative and scientific leadership positions in Pediatric Hematology Oncology (PHO) Chapter of India Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) as well as in the International Society of Pediatric Oncology. The program has a major commitment to participation in National Training Program in Practical Pediatric Oncology (NTP-PPO) and National Training Program in Practical Pediatric Hematology (NTP-PPH) through PHO chapter of IAP. Our division has been pioneering efforts to uniform treatment guidelines in various pediatric malignancies like Neuroblastoma, RMS as well as hematological diseases like Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Disease.

The Hematology and Oncology Division has a strong focus on research. A good investigative environment at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital enhances basic science research. Internationally renowned senior faculty in departments such as Genetics, Hematology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pathology and Radiology with whom we interact regularly have motivated us in our efforts. We strive to refine our work to create excellence in this field of medicine and look forward to guidance and support from colleagues across the world.
